On September 11-14, 2018, the 40th Annual Pennsylvania Council on Aging [PCoA] | Pennsylvania Association of Area Agencies on Aging [P4A] | Pennsylvania Department of Aging [PDA] ConventionConvention was held in Gettysburg at the Wyndham Hotel.
Faith Haeussler, the new Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Council on Aging, opened the Joint Council/Regional meeting on Wednesday, which was attended by 32 of the 67 counties of Pennsylvania. Haeussler formerly was the project manager for the Pennsylvania Link to Aging and Disability Resources.
Edward Rozell, Central Regional advisory council Chairman, representing Juniata county and 13 out of the 15 members of the 13 counties in the central region, attended.
Meetings and discussions were held on Thursday and Friday including PA Supreme Court Elder Justice Updates, Governor’s Blueprint for a Hunger Free PA, Reauthorization of the Older American Act Information and Advisory, PA’s Response to the Opioid Crisis, and PA’s Grandparents Raising their Grandchildren Due to the Opioid Crisis.
A highlight of the convention was a panel of former PDA Secretaries including Alma Jacobs appointed in 1985, Richard Browdie appointed in 1990, Lori Gerhard appointed in 2002, and Brian Duke, appointed in 2011, celebrating 40 year of Aging Experience. Alma Jacobs brought back memories of the PACE car that traveled the 67 counties in PA to enroll seniors in the PACE prescription drug program over 30 years ago.
Secretary of Aging Teresa Osborne gave the welcome address because Governor Tom Wolf was unavailable. The convention included members from the PCoA (PA Council on Aging), PDA (PA Department of Aging), and P4A (PA Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

NOTE: PCoA meetings are held the 1st Monday in January, March, May, July, and November and also meet at the annual 3-day convention in September. The council is looking for new members (note: no dues and mileage is compensated) to serve on the advisory council board.
