Every month our Program Manager, Amy Austin, hosts children who have a sibling with a disability at our office for games, snacks, crafts, and comradery. It is a time for them to feel important and valued but also a safe place to openly talk about their feelings and emotions. That might not happen anywhere else. We talk about the challenges around having a sibling with a disability, and we definitely also stress the positive side of just being a sibling. Many times, the siblings feel overlooked as attention is given to their sister or brother for medical care or other needs. The Sib Talk program gives them “their” time! Parents have this to say about our program:“Yesterday was my daughter’s first time at the Arc’s Sib Talk. I was hoping she’d find it helpful but I was cautiously optimistic. I’m pleased to report that she had a blast! Her only wish was that the group met weekly. I’m ecstatic. Thank you again for inviting her to join the group and for helping this mom support her child.”“She loves Sib Talk – can’t wait for each meeting.”“My child is building a community of peers.”“My kids have a lot of fun with their friends and treat their little brother well.”“I feel they have benefited from having time with other kids that have a sibling with disabilities.”The kids give these reactions:“I wish the meetings were longer.”“It is super duper fun!” ![]() |
