“Specifically, on July 30, 1966, President Johnson signed legislation which amended the Social Security Act, established Medicare for the elderly and Medicaid for low-income adults, including seniors, children, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities. Although Medicare and Medicaid started as basic health coverage programs, today they provide Americans with improved access to quality and affordable healthcare coverage.
